How to sell on Mercado Livre in 2026: a step-by-step guide to getting started and making a profit from your first sale

To sell on Mercado Livre in 2026, you need to complete eight steps: create an account (CPF or CNPJ), choose products with demand and margin, find a supplier, calculate the price with commission and shipping costs, publish your listing, set up shipping, ship on time, and protect your reputation. Creating an account and listing products is free. For each sale, Mercado Livre charges a category commission (10% to 14% for Classic) and a shipping cost based on weight and price range. The mistake that most often makes new sellers work for free happens at step four: copying a competitor's price without doing the math.

This guide is your roadmap. Each step has its own article with the details and numbers. Here, you'll find the right order and what each step needs.

#1. Create an account: CPF or CNPJ

You can get started with just a CPF. But you need a Nota Fiscal to use Mercado Livre's logistics services, especially FULL. Mercado Livre's free invoicing tool requires a CNPJ and an A1 digital certificate. If you plan to sell regularly, opening a MEI (annual limit of R$ 81 mil, with a monthly DAS of R$ 82,05 for retail in 2026) is the most common route.

#2. Choose products with demand and margin

Demand without margin means working without making a profit. Look for:

  • Demand: The product is among the best sellers or trending products, and top sellers have recent reviews.
  • Margin: At the price top sellers charge, at least 20% remains after commission, shipping, tax, and product cost.
  • Turnover: You can sell your first batch within 30 to 60 days.

To start, avoid selling products under R$ 30 individually: commission and shipping take more than a third of the price. Guides: best-selling products on Mercado Livre and how to tell if a product will be profitable.

#3. Find a supplier that issues invoices

A good supplier issues a Nota Fiscal, restocks at the same cost, and, if possible, offers payment terms. Wholesalers are good for testing; distributors and importers are better for growth. See how to find a supplier.

#4. Calculate the price before listing

The most important step. Here's the formula:

Price = (cost + packaging + shipping cost) ÷ (1 − commission − tax − margin)

For a product that costs R$ 30, weighs 300 grams, and has a 12% commission, 6% tax, and 20% margin, the price is R$ 62,50. Shipping cost comes from the official table, based on the billable weight (whichever is greater: actual or dimensional) and the price range.

Product Mercado Livre fees (commission + shipping) % of price
R$ 15, 200 g R$ 7,45 49,7%
R$ 29,90, 200 g R$ 10,44 34,9%
R$ 59,90, 400 g R$ 15,44 25,8%
R$ 89,90, 400 g R$ 24,64 27,4%

#5. Publish the listing

  • Type: Classic (10% to 14%) to get started; Premium (15% to 19%, with interest-free installments) for products over R$ 100 with plenty of margin. See Classic or Premium.
  • The right category, which determines the commission and filters.
  • Title that matches what buyers search for, accurate photos, and a complete spec sheet.
  • Actual stock: listing items you don't have leads to cancellations.

See the step-by-step guide to creating a listing on Mercado Livre.

#6. Set up shipping

  • Mercado Envios (pickup or drop-off location): the standard option, with shipping costs based on the table.
  • Flex: deliver the same day and get a bonus for each shipment. Great for products priced from R$ 19 to R$ 78,99. See Flex shipping.
  • Full: Mercado Livre stores and ships your stock. It requires a good reputation and a Nota Fiscal. See how Full works.

Measure the actual box and enter the correct weight and dimensions. They determine the shipping cost for every sale.

#7. Ship on time and protect your reputation

Your reputation only appears after your first 10 sales. It's based on complaints, cancellations, and late shipments, and determines:

  • the shipping cost (a green reputation gets discounted rates);
  • access to Flex, Full, and sponsored listings;
  • your visibility in search and buyers' trust.

If you don't set a handling time, the package must ship the same day (for sales made before the cutoff time) or the next day. See why reputation matters and returns for sellers.

#8. Track the margin on every sale

Your first sales test the price you calculated. Check the commission and shipping cost charged in each sale's details. If they differ from your calculations, the category or weight isn't what you expected.

Then track profit by product, not revenue. Sales proceeds are released days after delivery, and the money you receive isn't profit: you still have to pay for the product, tax, and listing. See revenue isn't profit and when your Mercado Livre sales proceeds are paid.

In practice. Two sellers started in the same month with similar household products. The first copied the market leader's price and sold 120 units in the first month. The second calculated the price using the shipping table and sold 80. At the end of the month, the first had made less than R$ 200 in profit because half of their products had higher shipping costs than expected. The second made R$ 1.400 in profit and had enough cash to buy the next batch.

#The five most common mistakes new sellers make

  1. Copying a competitor's price without calculating your minimum price.
  2. Forgetting shipping costs, which vary by weight and price range.
  3. Using Premium for a low-priced product, which doesn't qualify for installments below R$ 30.
  4. Listing stock you don't have, leading to cancellations just as you're building your reputation.
  5. Spending on Ads before you know your margin. A product's minimum ROAS is 1 divided by its margin. See Mercado Livre Ads in 2026.

How do I start selling on Mercado Livre?

Create an account with a CPF or CNPJ, choose products with demand and margin, calculate your price using the category commission and shipping cost, publish a listing (Classic or Premium), set up shipping through Mercado Envios, and ship on time. Your first 10 sales build your reputation, which determines shipping costs, visibility, and access to tools like Full and sponsored listings.

How much does it cost to sell on Mercado Livre?

Creating an account and listing products is free. For each sale, you pay the category commission (10% to 14% for Classic, 15% to 19% for Premium) and shipping, which ranges from R$ 5,65 to over R$ 100 depending on weight and price range. Together, these costs account for 20% to 35% of the price for most products, and over 40% for products under R$ 20.

Do I need a CNPJ to sell on Mercado Livre?

Not to get started. But a Nota Fiscal is required to use Mercado Livre's fulfillment services, especially Full, and the free invoicing tool requires a CNPJ. If you plan to sell regularly, opening a MEI is the most common option.

What should I sell on Mercado Livre to make a profit?

Choose products with proven demand (bestseller rankings, trends, and recent reviews of top sellers) and at least a 20% margin before Ads at the price your competitors charge. Avoid starting with individual products under R$ 30, where commission and shipping take more than a third of the price.
