Returns on Mercado Livre for sellers: deadlines, who pays for shipping, and what happens to the fee
On Mercado Livre, buyers have 30 days from delivery to return a new product. Who pays depends on the reason. Changed their mind or the right product didn’t fit: the return is free for you and doesn’t affect your reputation. Product is different from the listing, defective, or incomplete: you pay for return shipping, and sometimes outbound shipping too. The return counts as a complaint. In every case, the sales fee is refunded, but the sale disappears—and so does its margin.
Returns are one of the least visible costs in a spreadsheet and one of the most visible on your statement. I’ll cover the current rules, verified on official pages in October 2026, what happens to your money and reputation in each case, and how to reduce returns that are your fault.
#Return deadlines on Mercado Livre
Under the Compra Garantida Terms, deadlines start from the date of delivery:
| Scenario | Buyer’s deadline |
|---|---|
| New product (changed mind, defective, different, incomplete) | 30 calendar days |
| Product not delivered | 28 calendar days from purchase |
| Food, drinks, and pet food | 12 calendar days |
| International order not delivered | 60 days |
Official pages give conflicting deadlines for used or refurbished products (5 days on one page, 12 on another). If you sell used products, check the rule in your account.
Buyers also have up to 60 days from purchase to file a complaint. The 7-day right to cancel under Brazil’s Consumer Protection Code still applies; in practice, Mercado Livre gives buyers more time to return new products.
#Who pays for return shipping
The reason given by the buyer determines who pays:
| Reason | Return shipping | Does it affect your reputation? |
|---|---|---|
| Changed their mind | free for the seller | No |
| The right product didn’t fit (size, preference) | free for the seller | No |
| Different from the listing (model, color, size) | paid by the seller | may affect |
| Defective | paid by the seller | may affect |
| Incomplete | paid by the seller | may affect |
When the problem is your responsibility, the Terms say the seller covers the return shipping and, if applicable, the original shipping. In other words, you may pay for both legs of an order that generated no revenue.
#What happens to the money and the fee
When a return is initiated, the purchase amount is held in Mercado Pago. Once the return is complete, Mercado Livre debits the sale amount and reverses the expenses for that sale, such as the fee and shipping cost.
When the reversal happens depends on the billing cycle:
- Return in the same billing period as the sale: the fee is canceled.
- Return after the billing period closes: it becomes a credit on the next bill.
That’s why a statement for one month sometimes "returns" money from sales made in another month. To know a month’s real margin, subtract the return from the sale it came from, not from the month when the credit appeared.
#How much a return really costs
Even when the fee is reversed, a return isn’t free. For a R$ 100 product that would have left R$ 26,45 in margin:
| Reason | What you lose |
|---|---|
| Buyer’s remorse, product returned in perfect condition | the margin the sale would have generated, the packaging, and the time spent processing it again |
| Defective or different product | the margin, return shipping, possibly the original shipping, and the product’s cost if it can’t be resold |
The second case is the costly one. If a product with a cost of R$ 40 comes back unusable and you pay for both shipping legs, a single return can wipe out the profit from two or three good sales. I ran the numbers for the whole store in returns: why 4% of orders returned costs 6% of your profit.
#How the return review works
Return to your address. The buyer ships the product directly to you (in some cases, the package goes through a Mercado Livre center for review). You have 3 business days after receiving it to report any problem, with a photo or video. Mercado Livre makes two delivery attempts for the return (three if there was a scheduling issue); after that, the package is donated, recycled, or discarded.
Return reviewed by Mercado Livre. The outcome is available within 3 business days (up to 5 during sales campaigns). If fraud is confirmed, you receive the sale amount and Mercado Livre keeps the product.
Return through FULL. The product goes back to the distribution center and is reviewed within 3 business days. It may return to sellable stock, be made available for you to pick up (if it can’t be sold or the box is open), be returned to the buyer (if the return doesn’t meet the policy, in which case you receive the sale amount), or be discarded (if the box is empty or the product was switched; you also receive the sale amount).
Mercado Livre covers the seller when the product comes back defective, different from what was shipped, or doesn’t come back. It doesn’t cover the seller when the product comes back with the issue the buyer had already reported, with open or damaged packaging, or without packaging; when there’s no proof; or when you confirmed receipt and later said you hadn’t received it. That’s why you should film yourself opening returned packages.
#Returns and reputation
Returns count as claims, except for buyer’s remorse. To maintain a good reputation, claims must stay below 3% of sales. For MercadoLíder, the limit is 1%. A wave of returns marked "different from the listing" can cost you your medal before you notice. Find the limits for each medal in MercadoLíder, Gold, and Platinum in 2026.
In practice. A fitness apparel store had a 9% return rate on its best-selling leggings, with almost every return marked "didn’t fit," which is free and doesn’t affect reputation. It seemed harmless. But in a third of cases, the leggings came back with the tag removed and couldn’t be resold as new. Adding a size chart with a photo showing the fit to the listing cut returns to 4% in two months. The product’s margin increased more than any price increase could have.
#How to reduce returns that are your responsibility
- Accurate listing. Real photos, true-to-life colors, accurate measurements, and a clear list of what’s in the box. "Different from the listing" is the costliest and most avoidable reason for a return.
- Size charts for clothing and shoes, and clear compatibility details for parts and accessories.
- Check before shipping: model, color, and quantity. A picking error costs you shipping both ways and hurts your reputation.
- Protective packaging. A product damaged in transit becomes a defect in the buyer’s eyes.
- Answer questions. An unanswered question can lead to the wrong purchase.
#Track returns by product, not just by total
Your store’s return rate can be misleading: 3% overall may hide a product with a 15% return rate. Milewa records each return against its original order, including the return shipping cost, and shows each product’s margin after returns are deducted. You’ll see the real margin for listings that sell well but get returned often.
#Frequently asked questions
How long do buyers have to return a product on Mercado Livre?
For new products, buyers have up to 30 calendar days from delivery to request a return for buyer’s remorse, a defect, a different product, or an incomplete order. To report a product that wasn’t received, they have 28 calendar days from the purchase date. Used products and some categories, such as food, have shorter return windows.
Who pays for return shipping on Mercado Livre?
It depends on the reason. If the buyer changes their mind or the correct product doesn’t fit, the return is free for the seller and doesn’t affect reputation. If the product is different from the listing, defective, or incomplete, the seller pays for return shipping and may also have to cover the original shipping. The return may also affect reputation.
Does Mercado Livre refund the commission when a product is returned?
Yes. Once the return is complete, the sale amount is debited and the sale expenses, such as the fee and shipping cost, are reversed. If the cancellation falls within the same billing period, the fee is canceled. If it happens after the period closes, it becomes a credit on the next bill. The exception is when the seller is responsible for the issue: in that case, the seller pays for return shipping and sometimes the original shipping too.
What should you do if a returned product comes back damaged?
You have 3 business days after receiving the return to report the problem, with a photo or video. Mercado Livre covers the seller when the product comes back defective, different from what was shipped, or doesn’t come back. It doesn’t cover the seller when the product comes back with the issue the buyer had already reported, with open or damaged packaging, or without proof, or when you confirmed receipt and later said you hadn’t received it.
