Best-selling products on Mercado Livre: where to find them and how to choose profitable ones, not just high-volume sellers

Mercado Livre shows best sellers in three places: the best-sellers page, which ranks top products by category (the official ranking lists the top 20 in each category); the trends site, with the week's most-searched terms; and, for current sellers, the Metrics > Market analysis > Trends by category dashboard. The common mistake is to focus only on volume. A top-selling product that leading sellers offer for R$ 34,90 may leave you with a 9% margin; the same product at R$ 39,90 would leave you with 18%. Before buying stock, don't just ask, "Does it sell?" Ask, "Can I sell it at a price that makes me a profit?"

I'll show you where to research, how to read demand signals, and the filter I use to tell a good product from one that just moves units.

#Where to find Mercado Livre best sellers

Best-sellers page. Shows top products by category. It's the most obvious place to start, and for that very reason, the most competitive: everyone can see what's there.

Official ranking by category. Mercado Livre's documentation describes a best-sellers ranking (BEST_SELLER) with the top 20 products in each category, ranked by position. The exact counting criteria and time period aren't published, so treat it as a demand signal, not a sales figure.

Trends. On tendencias.mercadolivre.com.br , you'll find the most-searched terms from the past week. It doesn't show search volume, but it does show what's gaining traction. The best opportunity is when searches are growing before sellers react.

Seller dashboard. Under Metrics > Market analysis > Trends by category, you can view gross sales and units by category and export the data to Excel. For current sellers, it's the richest source because it gives you a sense of scale.

#Three signs that a product is really selling

  1. It ranks or appears in category trends.
  2. Top listings have recent reviews. A review only exists after a sale. If the top-ranked listing received dozens of reviews in the past month, the product is selling now, not just in the past.
  3. Several sellers are making sales on the same product. One seller with many sales could be a strong brand or have an old listing. Several sellers making sales indicate broad demand that can support a new seller.

If any of the three signs is missing, the demand is questionable.

#The filter almost everyone skips: margin at the top seller's price

Found a product with demand? Now calculate the margin at the price top sellers charge, not the price you wish you could charge. For a 300-gram product with a 12% commission on Clássico, 6% tax, and a cost of R$ 18:

Top sellers' price Profit per sale Margin
R$ 34,90 R$ 3,17 9,1%
R$ 39,90 R$ 7,27 18,2%

A five-real difference in competitors' prices doubles your margin. If top sellers charge R$ 34,90, entering at that price means selling at a 9% margin, with no room for paid ads or returns.

Now look at the effect of the shipping price threshold on a slightly more expensive product, weighing 600 grams and costing R$ 38:

Price Shipping cost Profit Margin
R$ 78,99 R$ 8,45 R$ 17,72 22,4%
R$ 79.90 R$ 14,45 R$ 12,47 15,6%
R$ 89,90 R$ 14,45 R$ 20,67 23,0%

If the top seller charges R$ 79,90, that's the worst possible price. You can enter the market at a lower price, at R$ 78,99, and still earn more per sale. This kind of opportunity becomes clear when you look at margin, not just price. I explain the threshold in free shipping on Mercado Livre: who pays.

In practice. An auto accessories seller built a list of 30 products using the best-seller rankings and trends. After calculating the margin at each top seller's price, 19 came in below 12%. Of the remaining 11, four had recent reviews across multiple sellers. The seller started with just those four and a small amount of stock. Two months later, they were the store's four most profitable products, and none ranked at the top.

#The 5-step filter for choosing a product

  1. Demand: The product appears in the rankings, trends, or your category dashboard.
  2. Current sales: Top sellers have recent reviews.
  3. Healthy competition: Several sellers are making sales, and none is priced far below the rest.
  4. Margin at the top seller's price: At least 20% before ads, using the package's actual weight and the category commission.
  5. Reliable supplier: You can restock at the same cost. A margin that depends on a one-time deal disappears when you restock.

A product that passes all five checks is worth stocking. One that passes the first three but fails the fourth is a trap: it sells a lot and leaves you with nothing.

#Best-selling doesn't mean most profitable

The same applies to your own store. The product that sells the most is rarely the most profitable because it's usually the most competitive and the cheapest. I showed this pattern in curva ABC: the top seller ranks fifth in profit. Before looking for new products, find out which of your current ones pay for your operation.

#How to calculate it quickly

For step 4, the Milewa calculator shows a product's margin at the price you enter, using the Clássico or Premium commission and the current shipping table. Try the top seller's price, a price just below the R$ 79 threshold, and the price you wish you could charge. The difference between the three often determines whether you buy.

Once the product is in your catalog, Milewa tracks the actual margin on every sale, based on what Mercado Livre really charged, and shows whether the product you chose for its demand is delivering the profit your calculations promised.

#Frequently asked questions

Where can I find the best-selling products on Mercado Livre?

On Mercado Livre's best-seller page, which shows the top products by category; on the trends site (tendencias.mercadolivre.com.br), which lists the most searched terms from the past week; and, for sellers, in the dashboard under Metrics, Market analysis, Trends by category, which shows gross sales and units by category and lets you export to Excel.

What are the best-selling products on Mercado Livre?

Rankings change by category and week, so check the official best-seller page and search trends when you're doing your research. The filter matters more than the list: a best-selling product is only right for you if it leaves a margin at the price top sellers charge, after commission, shipping cost, tax, and ads.

How can I tell if a product sells well on Mercado Livre before buying it?

Look for three signs: presence in the best-seller rankings or search trends, the number of recent reviews on top listings (a review only exists after a sale), and the number of sellers competing on the same product. Then calculate the margin at the price top sellers charge. Only buy stock if both sides of the equation work.
