How to find listings that lose money on Mercado Livre and Shopee: 6 traps and a step-by-step guide
A listing that loses money rarely looks unprofitable: it sells, brings in revenue, and gets lost in the store average. The six traps that most often lead to hidden losses are: products under R$ 30, prices just above a pricing threshold (R$ 79 on Mercado Livre; R$ 80, R$ 100, and R$ 200 on Shopee), heavy or bulky packages, Premium listings with paid ads, promotions combined with coupons, and outdated costs. To find them, run the numbers for each listing using what the marketplace actually charged, not the rate table you remember.
In the listing reports sellers show me, it’s common to find 10% to 30% selling at break-even or at a loss—and they’re often among the best sellers. I’ll show you how to spot each trap by running the numbers for six listings.
#The math for one listing
For a typical sale:
Profit = price − commission − shipping (or fixed fee) − tax − cost of goods sold − packaging − ad spend per sale
“Ad spend per sale” is the listing’s Mercado Ads or Shopee Ads spend for the month divided by its sales. If you don’t know this number, use the listing’s ADS percentage of revenue.
Use the values from the marketplace’s sale details: the commission and shipping cost shown there are what the category, weight, and reputation actually resulted in.
#Six listings, six traps
With 6% tax and R$ 0,60 packaging:
| Listing ads | Trap | Profit per sale |
|---|---|---|
| Accessory, R$ 24,90, 250 g, cost R$ 13 (ML) | low-priced product: R$ 6,85 shipping takes 28% of the price | −R$ 0,03 |
| Household item, R$ 79,90, 900 g, cost R$ 42 (ML) | one cent above the R$ 79 threshold | R$ 8,47 (at R$ 78,99, it would be R$ 13,72) |
| Heavy item, R$ 89,90, 6,5 kg, cost R$ 46 (ML) | R$ 27,55 shipping, 31% of the price | −R$ 0,43 |
| Electronics, R$ 119,90, Premium 17% + 9% ADS, cost R$ 65 (ML) | high commission combined with ads | −R$ 0,21 |
| Home, R$ 84,90, cost R$ 44 (Shopee) | dead zone: R$ 16 fixed fee | R$ 7,32 (at R$ 79,90, it would be R$ 10,03) |
| Decor, R$ 64,90, 400 g, cost R$ 29 (ML) | none | R$ 15,37 |
Three lose money, and two leave money on the table because of a pricing threshold. Only one is healthy. And none of them would look like a problem in the sales dashboard.
#The six traps, one by one
1. Products under R$ 30
On Mercado Livre, shipping for a light package priced between R$ 19 and R$ 48,99 costs R$ 6,85; on Shopee, the fixed fee for items up to R$ 79,99 is R$ 4,50. For a R$ 25 product, that already takes 18% to 28% of the price before commission. Solution: bundle products, raise the price, or leave the channel. See the rate tables for Mercado Livre fees and Shopee fees.
2. Prices just above a pricing threshold
On Mercado Livre, shipping for a 900 g package jumps from R$ 8,45 to R$ 14,45 when the price goes from R$ 78,99 to R$ 79. On Shopee, the fixed fee jumps from R$ 4,50 to R$ 16 when the price goes from R$ 79,99 to R$ 80. Solution: lower the price to just below the threshold or raise it past the dead zone. See Shopee’s three pricing thresholds.
3. Heavy or bulky packages
Mercado Livre charges based on whichever is greater: actual weight or dimensional weight. A 6,5 kg package priced at R$ 89,90 costs R$ 27,55 to ship. Solution: use smaller packaging, offer a lighter version, or sell the product where fees don’t depend on weight. See the full Mercado Livre shipping rate table.
4. Premium listings with paid ads
Five extra percentage points in commission plus 9% in ad spend take 14 points off your margin. Few products can handle that. Solution: use Clássico for sponsored listings, or set a higher target ROAS. See Clássico or Premium.
5. Promotion combined with a coupon
The seller's coupon stacks with the promotion. A product with a 20% margin on promotion for 10% off, plus a 10% coupon, comes close to zero. Solution: choose which listings to include in the coupon based on their margin. See seller coupons on Mercado Livre.
6. Outdated cost
If your supplier raised the price but the cost in your records is still the old one, your numbers show a margin that doesn't exist. Sometimes, an order has no cost recorded at all. Solution: update the average cost with every purchase. See COGS: what it is and how to calculate it.
In practice. A kitchenware store with 140 active listings did this review on a Saturday. It found 22 listings with negative profit and 15 just above a price threshold. The 22 accounted for 31% of the store's sales, almost all priced below R$ 40 and using paid Ads. Pausing Ads on 12, turning 6 into bundles, and pausing 4 increased profit the following month by 18%, while revenue fell 9%.
#The review, step by step
- Export your list of listings with each one's price, monthly sales, and ad spend.
- Pick a recent order for each listing and note the commission and shipping charged.
- Add the updated cost, tax, and packaging.
- Calculate profit per sale and multiply it by the month's sales.
- Sort from worst to best. The listings at the top are your to-do list.
- Identify the problem with each one and address the cause.
For a store with 50 listings, this takes an afternoon. For one with 500, it becomes a project. And you need to do it again whenever the marketplace changes its fee schedule or a supplier changes a price.
#A list that updates itself
Milewa continuously reviews your real orders. It applies the commission and shipping charged by Mercado Livre and Shopee on each sale, along with the product cost, tax, and the listing's Ads spend. It flags orders and listings with negative margins. Copiloto shows where your store is losing money, the monthly impact in reais, and suggests what to do: adjust the price, listing, or promotion.
#Frequently asked questions
How can you tell if a listing is losing money?
For a typical sale from the listing, add the commission and shipping cost (or Shopee's fixed fee) charged, tax on the price, product cost, packaging, and ad spend divided by sales. If the total is higher than the price, the listing is losing money. Use the amounts actually charged in the sale details, not estimates.
Why can a listing with high sales lose money?
Because volume hides the margin. Low-priced products with high shipping costs relative to their price, products on promotion, or products with lots of paid Ads are often the best sellers—and the ones with the lowest margins. Each sale costs you a little money, while high revenue makes it look like you're succeeding.
What should you do with a listing that's losing money?
First, find the cause: price, shipping, listing type, paid Ads, discount, or cost. Then address it: raise the price or lower it to just below a price threshold, change the packaging, switch from Premium to Classic, turn off paid Ads, end the promotion, or sell it as a bundle. If the numbers still don't work, pause the listing.
