Is selling on Shopee worth it in 2026? How much you keep, compared with Mercado Livre

Is selling on Shopee worth it in 2026? It can be for products priced between R$ 20 and R$ 79,99 with a healthy margin and, especially, for heavy products, because Shopee’s fee (20% + R$ 4,50 per item up to R$ 79,99) doesn’t change with weight. On a R$ 79,90 product weighing 2,5 kg and costing R$ 35, you keep R$ 19,03 on Shopee versus R$ 13,47 on Mercado Livre. It’s less worthwhile for items under R$ 20, where the fixed fee takes too much, and for lightweight items priced between R$ 80 and R$ 150, where Mercado Livre usually charges less.

"Is it worth it?" There’s no one-size-fits-all answer because Shopee and Mercado Livre charge in opposite ways. One charges by price range; the other, by category and weight. I’ll compare the numbers side by side and cover the operational rules that affect the outcome.

#How much Shopee charges

The commission already includes the transaction fee, and free shipping for buyers is covered by coupons subsidized by Shopee, capped at R$ 20 to R$ 40 depending on the price range. You don’t pay shipping separately, except when the registered weight or dimensions are lower than the actual ones. #The numbers: Shopee vs. Mercado Livre

Four products, with 6% tax, R$ 0,60 packaging, and, on Mercado Livre, a 12% commission on the Classic plan and a green reputation:

The pattern:

• Below R$ 20, both take more than 40% of the price in fees. Shopee comes out slightly ahead, but the profit is low on both. Low-priced products only make sense as bundles.
• Between R$ 20 and R$ 79,99 with a lightweight package, the two are tied. The decision comes down to conversion and competition.
• With a heavy package, Shopee wins, sometimes by a lot, because Mercado Livre charges for shipping based on weight.
• Above R$ 80 with a lightweight package, Mercado Livre tends to win because Shopee’s fixed fee rises to R$ 16 and R$ 20.

#What changes if you sell as an individual

You can start selling on Shopee without a CNPJ. But three rules matter as you grow:

• After 450 orders in 90 days, sellers using a CPF pay R$ 3 more per item. On a R$ 49,90 product, profit drops from R$ 11,83 to R$ 8,83—a 25% loss.
• Anyone with annual revenue of R$ 81 mil or more must issue a Nota Fiscal and have a CNPJ, according to Shopee.
• The Recommended Seller program, which provides a badge and more visibility, requires a CNPJ.

#Shipping deadlines and penalties: the hidden cost

Shopee is stricter than Mercado Livre about deadlines:

• Ship within 1 business day. Tuesday through Friday, orders paid by 1 p.m. ship the same day; orders paid after 1 p.m. ship by the next business day. For Express Delivery, the cutoff is 11 a.m.
• Penalty points for late shipping and failure to ship are assigned every Monday and reset each quarter.
• Penalty tiers start at 3 points and can reduce visibility, suspend free shipping starting at the second tier, and, since June 2026, trigger charges of R$ 100 to R$ 1.500 per tier. Stores with less than R$ 2.500 in sales in the previous month are exempt from the charge.

In practice, selling on Shopee requires an operation that ships every day. If you can’t meet the deadline, penalties become an expense and your visibility disappears. Selling without stock and shipping directly from the supplier is also prohibited on Shopee. I cover this in dropshipping on Shopee.

In practice. A seller of gym equipment sold dumbbells and weight plates only on Mercado Livre and thought Shopee was "too expensive because of the 20% fee." On a 4 kg weight plate set priced at R$ 74,90, Mercado Livre charged R$ 8,99 in commission and R$ 9,75 for shipping; Shopee charged R$ 14,98 in commission and a R$ 4,50 fixed fee—almost the same total. But 8 kg sets priced at R$ 129,90 cost R$ 39,25 to ship on Mercado Livre and only R$ 20 in fixed fees on Shopee. Opening a Shopee store just for the heavy items increased their margin by more than 10 percentage points.

#Who benefits most from selling on Shopee

• Heavy or bulky products in the mid-price range.
• A catalog priced between R$ 20 and R$ 79,99 that can stay below the R$ 80 threshold.
• Stores that ship every day and can meet the 1-business-day deadline.
• Sellers already on Mercado Livre who want a second channel for products with lower fees on Shopee.

#Who benefits less

• Products under R$ 15 sold individually: the fixed fee takes a third of the price or more.
• Lightweight products priced between R$ 80 and R$ 150 that cost less to sell on Mercado Livre.
• Operations that can’t ship on time: penalties become an expense.
