Free shipping on Mercado Livre: who pays and why the R$ 79 step is worse for heavy sellers
The one who pays for free shipping above R$ 79 on Mercado Livre is you. And the amount you pay doesn’t just depend on the package weight: it also depends on the price range your product falls into. That’s why crossing the R$ 79 line costs R$ 4.80 for a 300-gram item and R$ 27.40 for a 10-kilo item. The heavier your product, the deeper the hole just above R$ 79.
This is the part almost no one calculates before changing the price. People know there’s a threshold at R$ 79. Few know that the step changes height.
#How Mercado Livre handles shipping in each price range
There are three rules, and it’s worth understanding the logic of each one.
Below R$ 19, the buyer pays for shipping. You only pay a cost per unit, which for a light package is around R$ 5.65. This is the cheapest rule for sellers, but the hardest to convert, because the buyer sees shipping added to the price.
From R$ 19 to R$ 78.99, Mercado Livre gives free shipping to the buyer and charges you a single cost per unit, which already covers shipping. For 300 grams, R$ 8.15. There’s no separate shipping line on your statement. It’s a single charge.
From R$ 79 and up, you’re the one offering fast free shipping to the buyer, and the shipping cost moves up a tier: you pay the real shipping cost, with a discount based on your reputation color. For the same 300-gram package, R$ 12.95.
#How much it costs to cross R$ 79, by weight
I took a product with 12% commission, Classic, green reputation, no tax in the calculation, and compared the net at R$ 78.99 with the net just above R$ 79. Tax shifts the break-even point by less than four reais and doesn’t change the outcome. Then I calculated from what price you get back to the same net.
| Package weight | Shipping up to R$ 78.99 | Shipping from R$ 79 | Jump | Only worth it from |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| up to 300 g | R$ 8,15 | R$ 12,95 | R$ 4,80 | R$ 84,45 |
| 500 g to 1 kg | R$ 8,45 | R$ 14,45 | R$ 6,00 | R$ 85,81 |
| 1 to 1.5 kg | R$ 8,65 | R$ 14,75 | R$ 6,10 | R$ 85,93 |
| 2 to 3 kg | R$ 9,15 | R$ 16,45 | R$ 7,30 | R$ 87,29 |
| 5 to 6 kg | R$ 10,35 | R$ 25,95 | R$ 15,60 | R$ 100,36 |
| 9 to 10 kg | R$ 10,85 | R$ 38,25 | R$ 27,40 | R$ 125,70 |
In the 5 to 6 kg and 9 to 10 kg rows, there’s a window just before (from R$ 96.72 to R$ 99.99 and from R$ 117.86 to R$ 119.99) where the net also matches or exceeds, but it closes when the price enters the next tier and shipping goes up again. The table value is from where it’s really worth it.
Read the last row carefully. If your product weighs 10 kilos and is listed at R$ 95, you’re taking home less money than you would selling the same thing for R$ 78.99. The customer pays R$ 16 more and you get less.
In practice. A pet store owner showed me his catalog: bags of food and litter boxes between R$ 85 and R$ 105, all over 5 kilos. All in the dead zone, the range where a higher price brings in less net. He had two honest options: drop to R$ 78.90 and gain competitiveness, or go up to R$ 119 and gain margin. Staying in the middle wasn’t an option. He chose to raise prices on items with little competition and lower them on the competitive ones.
#Why heavy and cheap products are a structural problem
Because the shipping cost doesn’t go down when you lower the price, but your revenue does.
A 10-kilo item listed at R$ 90 pays R$ 38.25 in shipping. That’s 42.5% of the sale price going just to shipping, before commission, tax, and product cost. No supplier negotiation can fix that.
The solution is usually to change the product, not the price. Sell a kit with three units instead of a single one, to spread out the shipping. Reduce packaging, since the charge considers weight and size. Or accept that this item is for physical stores, not marketplaces.
#The reputation discount disappears along with your reputation
It’s worth remembering something that often goes unnoticed: the table above is for MercadoLíder and green reputation. If you’re yellow, orange, or red, you pay more for the same shipping.
This means a drop in reputation isn’t just a showcase problem. It raises the cost of all your listings above R$ 79 at once, and the effect shows up in your margin before it shows in your sales. I wrote about what triggers this in the article on reputation.
#What to do on Monday morning
Open your list of listings and filter those between R$ 79 and R$ 130. For each one, check the weight. If the price is below the break-even value for that row in the table, you have a decision to make today: lower or raise.
If you want to test a price before changing it, the profit calculator already has the shipping table by weight and range built in. And if your catalog has more than fifty listings, this scan becomes machine work, not human work. That’s exactly the kind of thing Milewa points out automatically, listing by listing.
#Frequently asked questions
Who pays for free shipping on Mercado Livre?
Free shipping starts from R$ 19. Between R$ 19 and R$ 78.99, Mercado Livre offers standard free shipping to the buyer, and the seller pays a per-unit cost that already includes shipping. From R$ 79 up, the seller offers fast free shipping and pays the shipping cost for that tier, with a discount based on reputation color. Below R$ 19, shipping is paid by the buyer.
From what price is it worth going above R$ 79 on Mercado Livre?
It depends on the weight. For a package up to 300 grams, from R$ 84.45. For 1 to 1.5 kg, from R$ 85.93. For 5 to 6 kg, only from R$ 100.36. For 9 to 10 kg, only from R$ 125.70. Between R$ 79 and these values, you get less net than you would selling at R$ 78.99.
Does green reputation give a shipping discount on Mercado Livre?
Yes. The shipping cost table changes by reputation color, and MercadoLíder and green reputation pay less than yellow, orange, or red. Losing green reputation increases the cost of every shipment, which cuts the margin of all listings above R$ 79 at once.
